PP Compounds (Eco-Friendly Flame Retarded)
PP Compounds (Eco-Friendly Flame Retarded)
Properties
Enhanced flame retardancy
- Capable of achieving UL94 V-0 or V-1 ratings. Some UL94 5VA
- Increased Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)
- Formation of a char layer during combustion, which suppresses flame propagation
Reduced smoke and toxic gas generation
- Phosphorus FRs produce far less smoke and harmful gases compared to halogen FRs
- During burning, they create a protective phosphate-char layer, minimizing gas release
Improved thermal stability and dimensional stability
- When well-dispersed, they enhance heat resistance and reduce deformation at elevated temperatures
Better retention of mechanical properties
- Phosphorus FRs generally cause less reduction in strength or toughness than halogen FRs
Environmentally friendly & regulation compliant
- Meets major regulations such as RoHS, REACH
- Preferred in global electronics and appliance applications
Mechanism of Phosphorus Flame Retardants (Simplified)
- Act mainly in the condensed phase
- Form a carbon-rich char barrier on the polymer surface
- This layer blocks heat and oxygen, helping self-extinguishing behavior
- Unlike halogen FRs, they do not rely on gas-phase radical trapping

Performance Advantages
- No corrosive residues, unlike halogen FRs
→ Prevents corrosion in electrical contacts or metal inserts - More thermally stable at high temperatures
- Better compatibility with polymer blends (PC/ABS, PA, PBT, etc.)
Flame-retardant mechanism difference
- Phosphorus FR → Condensed-phase action (char formation)
- Halogen FR → Gas-phase action, producing more smoke and harmful gases
Mechanical property retention
- Less reduction in strength/toughness
- Halogen FRs typically degrade mechanical properties more severely
Processing advantages
- No corrosive off-gassing during molding
- Reduced mold corrosion and maintenance costs
- Less odor during processing
